Respite Care Services for Ontario Families
Caring for a loved one is deeply rewarding — and deeply demanding. SFCS provides trusted, compassionate respite care so that primary caregivers can rest, recharge, and know their loved one is in safe, capable hands.
Support for the Caregiver, Care for the Individual
Respite care is temporary, planned or emergency support provided to give primary caregivers a break from their caregiving responsibilities. It is one of the most important — and often most underutilized — supports available to families caring for a loved one with a disability, complex health needs, or a chronic condition.
Caregiver burnout is real and serious. Taking regular breaks isn't a luxury — it's essential to the long-term sustainability of family caregiving. Respite care allows caregivers to attend to their own health, employment, social connections, and well-being, knowing that their loved one is receiving attentive, quality care from a trusted professional.
SFCS provides respite care services through qualified, vetted support workers who are experienced working with individuals with disabilities or complex care needs. Our respite workers step in seamlessly, following the individual's established routines and preferences to ensure continuity and comfort.
Types of Respite Care We Provide
We offer flexible respite options designed to fit your family's schedule, the individual's needs, and your comfort level.
In-Home Respite
A qualified respite worker comes to your home to care for your loved one while you step away. The individual stays in their familiar environment, maintaining their routine and comfort. Available for a few hours, a full day, or overnight.
- Familiar home environment maintained
- Follows established daily routine
- Flexible scheduling (daytime, evening, overnight)
- Available on a recurring or one-time basis
Community-Based Respite
The respite worker accompanies the individual on community outings and activities — parks, recreation centres, social events, or other preferred destinations. An excellent option for individuals who enjoy social engagement and community access.
- Community access and social activities
- Outings tailored to preferences and interests
- Transportation support where available
- Encourages independence and participation
Planned Scheduled Respite
Regularly scheduled respite care arranged in advance — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Ideal for caregivers who want consistent, predictable relief built into their routine to maintain balance and prevent burnout.
- Regular, consistent scheduling
- Same worker builds familiarity over time
- Helps caregivers plan personal commitments
- Adjustable as needs change
Emergency & Short-Notice Respite
Unexpected situations — a medical appointment, family emergency, or sudden caregiver illness — sometimes require short-notice respite support. We work to accommodate urgent requests as quickly as possible through our ready professional network.
- Responsive to urgent needs
- Network of available professionals
- Safety and familiarity still prioritized
- Clear communication throughout

Our Approach to Respite Care
We understand that bringing a new person into your home or your loved one's routine can feel daunting. That's why we take a careful, relationship-focused approach to every respite arrangement — ensuring the individual, their family, and the respite worker all have what they need for a positive experience.
Before any placement, we conduct a thorough intake to learn about the individual's daily routine, preferences, communication style, likes, dislikes, and any specific care requirements. We then match a respite worker whose skills and personality are well-suited to that individual.
We encourage a brief introduction meeting before the first session so that the individual and caregiver can meet the respite worker in a low-pressure setting. This helps build trust and familiarity before the caregiver steps away.
